Bonfire

2017

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A warm light made from a difficult waste stream.

Bonfire reforms recycled plastic straws into a luminous, flame-like lamp. A simple material intervention turns a disposable item into a lasting object.

01 · RESEARCH

A disposable straw can become a lasting material.

Single-use plastic straws are easily lost to the natural environment. Bonfire begins by treating this difficult waste stream as an expressive material instead of hiding it.

02 · MATERIAL MAKING

Heat reforms every straw into a unique curve.

Straight recycled straws are cut and reshaped by hand. Their irregularity becomes the lamp’s flame-like character.

03 · END OF LIFE

Three parts. No glue. No paint.

The wooden base, light diffuser and reformed straws separate cleanly, keeping the lamp easy to repair and recycle.
